What to Do Before Your Appointment

Toothache

Rinse your mouth with warm salt water. Take over-the-counter painkillers, following the dosage instructions. Do not put aspirin directly on your gum or tooth, as it can irritate the tissue.

Knocked-out tooth

Hold the tooth by the crown (the top part), not the root. If it is dirty, rinse it gently with water, but do not scrub it. Try to put it back into the socket. If you cannot, keep it in a container of milk or saliva. Try to reach us within an hour for the best chance of saving the tooth.

Broken or chipped tooth

Rinse your mouth with warm water and use a cold compress to reduce any swelling. Keep any broken pieces to show your dentist.

Lost filling or crown

Keep the crown or filling if you can and bring it with you. Protect the tooth with dental cement or sugar-free gum, and avoid chewing on that side until you are seen.

Bleeding

Bite down gently on a clean cloth or gauze to slow the bleeding.

After struggling with a very old crown on my molar tooth, pain and the old crown falling out, I needed a practice nearby with great reviews. Last night, I woke with pain and contacted Sharples Dental based on their customer reviews through their webpage. At 9.00am today I was called by the receptionist to offer an urgent appt. I was seen at lunch time same day, X-ray taken which showed an infection. The tooth (what was left of it) was beyond repair, so I was offered an extraction the same day or to choose a later date, so chose to get it over with.
